The invisible loss
A bounced session looks identical whether the visitor was a competitor, a student, or a buyer with budget who couldn't confirm one specification. That ambiguity is why the problem persists: there is no report showing 'lost because nobody answered the compatibility question'.
The only way to see it is to have something on the page that people can talk to. The log of what they ask is the missing report.
Reason 1: the question wasn't answered anywhere
Compatibility, lead time, minimum quantities, what happens after purchase, whether it handles their edge case. Companies omit these because the honest answer is 'it depends' — but 'it depends, here's on what' converts, and silence doesn't.
Reason 2: no price signal
Buyers must bracket cost to keep evaluating. 'Contact us for pricing' asks them to spend social capital before they know whether you're in range, so the ones who aren't sure just leave. Ranges, drivers or worked examples keep them in the process.
Reason 3: the only CTA was too big
'Book a 30-minute demo' is a large commitment for someone eight minutes into research. Sites that offer only that lose everyone who isn't ready — and there is no smaller step for them to take.
Reason 4: nobody was there
Much research happens at night, on weekends, and from other time zones. Those visitors meet a form and a phone number that opens tomorrow. By tomorrow they have read three competitors' sites.
Reason 5: the chat widget was useless
Prior widgets trained buyers to expect deflection. Anything on the page now has to demonstrate competence in the first reply or it will be closed on reflex.
What to do about it
- Publish the answers to the five questions every buyer asks
- Give a price signal even without exact pricing
- Add a low-commitment next step beside the demo request
- Put someone knowledgeable on the page at every hour
- Read what visitors ask, and fix the pages that keep generating the same question
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find out why visitors are leaving?
- Session recordings and exit surveys help a little. The most direct method is conversation: when visitors can ask questions, the questions themselves tell you what your pages are failing to answer.
