Conversational selling

What Is Conversational Commerce?

Conversational commerce is the practice of buying and selling through conversational interfaces — messaging apps, live chat, voice assistants and, increasingly, autonomous AI agents — rather than exclusively through static pages, catalogs and forms.

Where the term came from

The phrase entered common use in the mid-2010s alongside the rise of messaging platforms, when it looked as though commerce would migrate into chat threads. Brands built messaging storefronts and scripted assistants, and a genuine shift happened in some markets — particularly where messaging apps were already the dominant consumer surface.

Why the first wave stalled

The interface changed but the intelligence didn't. Decision trees could handle order status and simple reordering, and fell apart on anything resembling a real buying question. Buyers learned quickly that the chat window was a slower way to reach a FAQ, and engagement decayed.

What changed

Language models made grounded, multi-turn, unscripted conversation practical, and real-time voice and avatar technology made it possible for that conversation to feel like a presence rather than a transcript. The agent can now do the part that was missing: understand an ambiguous need and form a judgment about it.

That step — from scripted interface to autonomous participant — is what HeySale calls Agentic Conversational Commerce.

Frequently asked questions

Is conversational commerce the same as ecommerce chat?
Ecommerce chat is one channel within it. Conversational commerce covers any commercial interaction conducted through dialogue, including B2B website sales conversations that never involve a shopping cart.
